Kunukku | Crispy Lentil Fritters

Kunukku is another one of my mom's special dishes. Since she is here, I asked her to make it. I love to cook, but then nothing like coming into the kitchen now and then and popping couple of them in the mouth. Yes, it is a deep fried snack, but at least it is made of lentils unlike many other deep fried snacks. It is a good tea time snack. You can prepare the batter just to do the kunukku or you can prepare this with the adai batter too.  If there are kids at home, they will surely love them. Mine did. It tastes best when served hot.

Ingredients
Thoor dhal - 1 cup
Raw rice - 1 cup
Channa dal - 2 cup
Urad dal - 1 tbsp
Curry leaves - 10
Hing - 1tsp
Onion - 1
Salt
Red chilies - 3
Ginger - chopped finely

Method
* Soak dal and rice separately for 2-3 hrs.
* Grind the rice followed by thoor dal, urad dal, red chillies and channa dal. Do not add too much water while grinding.
* Add curry leaves, hing, chopped onions, ginger and salt

* Heat oil in a pan.
* Take the batter (about the size of a gooseberry) and drop it into the oil. You need not flatten it or make it into balls. Just drop it like you would do for pakodas. You can drop 10 or more depending on the size of the pan. Ensure they don' t stick to one another.
* Fry on medium heat until they turn golden.

* Take them out using a slotted spoon and drain the excess oil. Spread them on tissue paper.

We made much more than what you see in the picture. But I could save only so much for the picture. They are that good:)

Enjoy the crispy snack. Sending this to Krithi's Serve it fried  and sukanya's Monsoon Medly and to Flavors of South India
